GRANTS

2019 Grants

Thin Green Line Foundation

Project: Ranger Care & Connect
Grant amount: $104, 650

With the support of the Capricorn Foundation, Thin Green Line Foundation seeks to strengthen nature conservation efforts in East Africa by equipping wildlife Rangers with the critical gear they need and bolstering Rangers’ relationships with local communities. Initially focusing on Uganda and Kenya, our project has two major components:

1. Ranger Critical Care Boxes – providing teams of Rangers with the essential field equipment they need to perform their patrols

2. Junior Ranger Program – aims to connect school children with the work of Rangers through a program of lessons, practical activities and field visits. By targeting both components in tandem on specific conservation areas we hope to make a significant impact on the quality of rangering and community engagement in these places, creating the conditions for successful long-term conservation in some of Africa’s most iconic wild places.

Australian Wildlife Conservancy

Project: Restoring wild populations of Mala to central Australia
Grant Amount: $49,980

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner and manager of land for conservation in Australia, protecting 88% of Australia’s bird species and 72% of our mammal species.

With help from the Capricorn Foundation, we are restoring wild populations of critically endangered Mala (extinct in the wild) to Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary in central Australia. Here, AWC has established the largest (9,450 hectare) feral predator-free area on the continent and is undertaking one of Australia’s most ambitious rewilding projects – one that will see the populations of at least six threatened Australian mammals, including the Mala, more than doubled.

Kids Under Cover

Project: Partner in preventing youth homelessness
Grant Amount: $60,000

Kids Under Cover envisions an Australia where no young person in our community is homeless. Working in partnership with over 60 community service organisations, they deliver an early intervention approach to preventing youth homelessness by providing relocatable studio accommodation and scholarships for at-risk and homeless young people.

The Capricorn Foundation is supporting Kids Under Cover in 2019 by co-funding a project to divert four to five young people from homelessness by building four new studios, and provide approximately 17 young people living in Kids Under Cover accommodation with basic needs scholarships to help offset the costs of their ongoing education/training.
